Course Description: This CE is designed to prepare licensed social workers and other clinical practitioners with the required skills and competencies for using cognitive restructuring within the context of undermining suicidal behavior among adults. Skills training using cases, role play, interactive activities as well as small and large group discussions will be used to rehearse and to practice cognitive restructuring interventions and therapeutic techniques used in Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Suicide Prevention with adults. The focus of this CE is “hands on” skills training with a variety of evidence based cognitive interventions and activities related to micro practice (e.g., ABC Worksheets, Challenging Questions Worksheets, Patterns of Problematic Thinking Worksheets, Activity Planning, Coping Cards) This is an intermediate/advanced level skills training is designed to benefit licensed social workers, graduate and doctoral students, and other professionals working with adults at heighted risk for suicide.

Monica M. Matthieu is Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University and is a Research Social Worker for the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). She currently teaches direct practice courses, online and at SLU, to include social work practice with individuals, families and groups, advanced clinical social work practice, evidence-based practices with youth, evidence based practices in community mental health, veterans’ services, SBIRT, and trauma treatment for adults. Dr. Matthieu is engaged in research and program evaluation related to VA’s national suicide prevention program, implementation of trauma treatment in the VA, and improving assessment, intervention, and referral to treatment for individuals at risk for suicide in social service and health care settings in the St Louis metro area.
