Course Description: This presentation examines the history of mental health treatment in Missouri organized around the four historical phases of treatment ranging from the Colonial period to the present. For each phase of treatment, information is first presented at the national level to provide a context for local treatment. Emphasis is placed on the disempowerment of people with mental illness experienced through their mental health treatment and its implications for understanding and addressing the fear that many people.

Presented by: Donald Linhorst, Ph.D., MSW, is a Professor of Social Work and Director of the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University. Prior to assuming his academic position, he worked for 15 years with people with severe mental illness at both a community-based nonprofit organization and a state psychiatric hospital. His research focuses on the empowerment of people with mental illness, the evaluation of mental health programs, and the intersection of the mental health and criminal justice system.
